The Amargi reports that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has spent millions of dollars building a lobbying operation in Washington to influence U.S. policy and strengthen political and business ties, according to publicly available disclosures mandated under U.S. law, known as the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).
Since 2008, the KRG’s diplomatic office in Washington, known as KRG USA, has received roughly $40 million from Erbil, with many lobbying and legal firms earning around $20,000 per month. One of the KRG’s main partners is BGR Group, which has reportedly received more than $10 million since 2004 to provide strategic political access and Congressional advocacy, particularly on defense and foreign policy issues.
The KRG also paid Greenberg Traurig about $3.9 million between 2007 and 2021 for lobbying and legal services. These firms helped promote the Kurdistan Region as a stable, investment-friendly U.S. ally and supported initiatives ranging from military aid for the Peshmerga to energy deals with American companies, according to the Amargi.
