The deputy speaker of the Iraqi parliament Shakhawan Abdullah has said Kurdistan’s regional elections cannot take place without the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s (KDP) participation. Speaking to journalists, Abdullah said: “The Kurdistan Democratic Party is a major force in the political arena and without it there can be no elections, this is a fact that all political parties in Baghdad have realized.” The elections have faced multiple delays due to political disputes and legal issues. While most political parties have submitted their candidate lists, the KDP has chosen to boycott the vote, citing objections to a federal court ruling that altered the electoral system.
