Rudaw – PM Barzani invites int’l monitors to observe upcoming elections

Masrour Barzani meets with the head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert (Masrour Barzani/X)

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has invited international observers to monitor the upcoming parliamentary elections in the region, saying he wants to “secure a fair, credible and transparent process”. The invitation was conveyed during a meeting with the head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, Rudaw reported. The elections, originally scheduled for June 10, have faced multiple delays due to political disputes and legal issues. While most political parties have now submitted their candidate lists, the ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) has chosen to boycott the vote, citing objections to a federal court ruling that altered the electoral system.
