The US State Department has said it is “concerned” by the recent Kurdistan Democratic Party’s (KDP) decision to boycott the Kurdistan Region’s long-overdue general elections. The KDP has announced that it will not take part in the election on June 10, describing the elections as “illegal” and “unconstitutional” following the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court’s ruling to eliminate minority quota seats, Rudaw reported. In a press briefing, US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel said: “We’re concerned by the KDP’s announcement…we don’t think that boycotting these elections will serve the interests of the IKR, the Kurdish people, or Iraq in general.”
