Medya News – Iraqi Kurdistan’s press freedom under scrutiny as US Consulate sounds warning

The US Consulate General in Erbil has expressed concerns of growing challenges to press freedom in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, including arbitrary detentions and insufficient implementation of key media laws. Consul General Mark Stroh held a meeting with independent media representatives to understand their experiences and obstacles. Kurdistan’s press freedom has faced international scrutiny, with numerous journalists imprisoned, and Reporters Without Borders (RSF) highlighting a “worrisome” increase in violations.
