The US Consulate in Erbil has expressed concern about the “recent backsliding” of press freedom in the Kurdistan Region. In a statement, the consulate added that it was “committed to working with local and international partners to improve the media landscape, including providing professional development opportunities for journalists.”

The KRG has played down the concerns, with Peshawa Hawramani, a KRG spokesperson, saying there had been “a 42 percent drop in the violations against journalists” in the past year.
