Iraq’s Communications and Media Commission (CMC) says it has finalised all legal and regulatory steps to shut down telecom operator Korek Telecom, led by CEO Sirwan Barzani, clearing the way for a new national mobile carrier to boost market competition, Shafaq News reports. The CMC said the procedures were completed in line with applicable laws and decisions to safeguard state interests.
The development follows the CMC’s February 2025 order for the immediate shutdown of Korek Telecom’s internet services, citing the operator’s failure to pay its debts and continued regulatory violations
