October 20 has been set as the new date for Kurdistan’s long-overdue parliamentary elections, a spokesperson for the presidency has said. “This date is not the date that everyone agreed on, but it is the date that we ultimately chose”, spokesperson Dilshad Shahab said per Rudaw. The elections were initially due to be held in October 2022, but have faced multiple setbacks, including the ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) saying in March 2024 that it would boycott the vote. The decision drew widespread criticism, with the US State Department saying at the time that it was “concerned” by the news.
